Corn Squire will showcase Maize’s growing economic values as it has emerged as a major cash crop in Lalmonirhat, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said on Friday. Corn Square would feature an iconic architectural design highlighting the importance of maize to the district, he said while inaugurating the construction of Corn Square in Lalmonirhat town.
“Maize has become the branding crop of Lalmonirhat. Its cultivation has increased significantly in recent years improving livelihoods of farmers in the region,” Dulu said, according to a press release.
“Maize has become an important part of the district’s economic identity. Just as India Gate is a symbol of Delhi and Faisal Mosque is a symbol of Islamabad, Corn Square will become a symbol of Lalmonirhat,” he said.
The minister said maize cultivation was creating new economic opportunities for rural communities. Although farmers previously showed little interest in the crop due to low yields, the situation had changed significantly over the past three decades, he said. He said the soil in his village was suitable for maize cultivation, while satisfactory yields and market prices had encouraged farmers to expand production.
Small agro-based industries have also developed around maize production, creating additional economic opportunities and raising hopes for development in the relatively less-developed region, Dulu added.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Md Rashedul Haque Prodhan, District Council Administrator AKM Mominul Haque, government officials and political leaders attended the programme.
