Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has withdrawn the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cantonment Police Station, Md Rakibul Islam, after an audio clip containing controversial remarks allegedly made by him about the administration and the police spread on social media.
An office order signed by DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed stated on Thursday that Rakibul Hasan has been attached to the Central Reserve Office at DMP Headquarters for administrative reasons.
In the audio clip, which went viral on Wednesday night, a voice allegedly belonging to the OC can be heard criticising the government, the administration, the Bangladesh Army and the police force.
He said, “The police on the streets are weak. If Sheikh Hasina returns in December, they can’t do anything.”
He was also heard saying, “Sheikh Hasina should return this month rather than wait until December.”
However, in a Facebook post, OC Rakibul claimed that the viral clip was created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The audio was widely discussed on various social media platforms and reported by several media outlets.
