Experts urge int’l actions for Rohingya repatriation
A A

Experts on Monday called on the international community to step up pressure on Myanmar to ensure the sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas, saying the prolonged crisis poses a direct threat to Bangladesh's national priorities.
They made the remarks at a seminar titled “Challenges of Rohingya Repatriation: International Politics and National Priorities" at Dhaka University (DU). Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam attended the seminar as the chief guest, while DU Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam was the guest of honour.
Shamsul Islam called for sustained international pressure on Myanmar to facilitate the safe and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas, saying the crisis is no longer merely a humanitarian issue but also a threat to national security, regional stability, and diplomacy.
"While Bangladesh has shown great generosity by sheltering the Rohingya for nine years, it cannot carry this burden indefinitely," he said, adding that treating the crisis as a permanent responsibility for Bangladesh would be morally and strategically unacceptable.
Prof Obaidul Islam said the prolonged crisis has placed severe economic, social, and environmental pressure on Bangladesh. He stressed that international organisations, including the United Nations and ASEAN, must keep the issue on their agendas to ensure justice and accountability.
He added the only sustainable solution to the crisis is the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of Rohingya to Myanmar.
Experts, academics, senior government officials and other dignitaries attended the seminar and shared their views on the crisis.
