A mobile court on Monday demolished 50 illegal structures and removed around 100 tonnes of waste from the banks of the Old Buriganga Channel in the capital’s Lalbagh area, aiming to reclaim the natural flow of the waterway and curb pollution.
The fresh eviction drive was jointly conducted by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Dhaka district administration, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and the Department of Environment (DoE) in line with a High Court directive.
The drive is targeting illegal structures and plastic and other waste along nearly a one-kilometre stretch of the Old Buriganga Channel in Lalbagh and Kamrangirchar areas.
