Golapi Begum, who once lived in hardship on the Shahbagh pavement, received the keys to a new home in Ratanpur village of Nabinagar upazila in Brahmanbaria on Friday, under an initiative directed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, also an adviser to ‘Amra BNP Poribar’, handed over the keys on behalf of the prime minister at noon and provided her with financial assistance.
Golapi’s plight came to Tarique Rahman’s attention during a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal rally in 2025 marking the anniversary of the July uprising of 2024, when she was living on the Shahbagh pavement. He instructed his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon to address the matter on humanitarian grounds.
She was subsequently housed in Dhaka and received treatment for nearly a year. Tarique Rahman, BNP chairman and chief patron of ‘Amra BNP Poribar’, later directed that a permanent home be built for her. The organisation constructed the house in Ratanpur.
Among those present were ‘Amra BNP Poribar’ member secretary Krishibid Moksedul Momin Mithun, Brahmanbaria-3 MP and district BNP president Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamol, Brahmanbaria-5 MP Advocate Abdul Mannan, district BNP general secretary Sirajul Islam Siraj and several other party and Chhatra Dal leaders.
The leaders told local media that supporting neglected and distressed people remained a key objective of ‘Amra BNP Poribar’ and that such humanitarian work would continue under Rahman’s direction.
