Rizvi urges opposition to advise on gas, power crises in parliament

BNP acting secretary general and Prime Minister’s Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday urged opposition lawmakers to suggest ways to resolve the ongoing gas and power crises instead of threatening street agitation.
“It’s okay if you (the opposition) carry out activities and long marches for gas and power. But first you need to give an alternative on how we will get gas and power, from where and in which way,” he said.
Rizvi made the remarks while speaking at the inaugural function of the new executive committee of Bangladesh Nrityashilpi Sangstha at the Jatiya Natyashala Auditorium of Shilpakala Academy in the capital. “The gas and power crises have been created due to international wars and wrong decisions taken by the previous governments,” he said. He said criticising the government and holding programmes outside parliament were normal democratic practices, but the opposition should also offer suggestions to tackle crises.
“The opposition leaders have the opportunity to speak in parliament. Although criticism of the government and street agitation are democratic practices, advice is also needed to tackle crises,” Rizvi said. He warned that repeating past mistakes could worsen the situation.
Rizvi linked the gas and power crisis to international conflicts and disruptions to global fuel supply chains, saying restrictions on fuel transportation through the Strait of Hormuz had made fuel imports difficult.
He also claimed that the crisis was not the government’s fault.
