Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury on Saturday warned against using artificial intelligence (AI) in writing court verdicts, saying issues involving cases, laws, evidence and judicial conscience cannot be justified by AI.
"An effective law and policy needs to be created on where AI can be used and to what extent. AI must be used to make people's lives easier and protect their fundamental rights," he said while attending the inauguration of the first AI Governance Summer School at the Asiatic Society auditorium in the capital.
He stressed the importance of training and efficiency alongside AI infrastructure and warned against using AI-generated information without proper scrutiny. "Issues related to cases, laws and sections, information and data and conscience of the judges cannot be justified by AI. This is why caution must be followed while using AI in judicial decisions," he said.
Meanwhile, High Court Division Justice Md Habibul Gani is set to take oath as a judge of the Appellate Division today.
Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury will administer the oath at the Judges’ Lounge of the Supreme Court at 9:30am.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir appointed Habibul Gani as a Supreme Court justice. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued a gazette on Thursday, saying his appointment would take effect from the date of his oath under Article 95(1) of the Constitution.
