Kolkata-based famous Indian theatre troupe ‘Ha Ja Ba Ra La’ staged their acclaimed theatre production ‘Jahanara Jahanara’, written and directed by eminent theatre personality Chandan Sen, on March 31, 2018 at National Theatre Hall, BSA.
The play `Jahanara Jahanara’ focuses on not only a harsh reality of a poor Muslim woman named Jahanara but also a communal society where education cannot minimize the divided tradition of faith. Jahanara, the protagonist of the play, lives in a slum and works as a domestic help but in the disguise of a Brahmin woman. She is compelled to hide her identity as it is very difficult to find a job as a Muslim woman in the context of the play.
The play portrays the social incongruities through the character of Jahanara while the protagonist keeps fighting against all odds and even does not hesitate to embrace any identity with a view to earning bread and butter for her daughter. In short, the play depicts the pathetic situation of a society where Jahanara cannot live like a common citizen just because of her religious identity.
The costume was designed by Bindiya Ghosh while stage design was done by Nilav and Nil Koushik. Monoj Prashad was the light designer of the play whereas Shuvodip Ghuho composed music for this play. The performance was appreciated by Dhaka audience.
