Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md Aminul Islam has said that retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury was the “main mastermind” behind the inhumane and crimes against humanity committed during the 1/11 (One-Eleven) caretaker government period.
He made the remarks during a briefing at his office on the tribunal premises on Sunday.
The prosecutor said Masud Uddin had been interrogated following his arrest in a case over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising. According to him, investigators are now verifying the information obtained during the interrogation.
Responding to journalists’ questions, Aminul Islam said several individuals, including Masud Uddin, were considered the “de facto government” during the 1/11 period and effectively controlled the administration at the time.
He further alleged that Masud Uddin had involvement not only in incidents during the 1/11 government but also in events surrounding the July mass uprising and various activities linked to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The chief prosecutor added that investigators are examining all allegations and that Masud Uddin could be made an accused in any case where evidence of crimes against humanity is found.
