Nine killed in road crashes

Nine people were killed and 20 others injured in separate road accidents throughout the country on Thursday. In Khulna, at least five people were killed and 15 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Dumuria upazila of the district. The Koyra-bound passenger bus from Khulna plunged into the ditch around 12.30 pm in Baratia village area after its driver lost control of the vehicle. Two of the deceased were identified as Md Shariful Islam, 35, and Mostafa Gazi, 45. The injured were sent to Dumuria Upazila Health Complex and Khulna Medical College. Most of the bus passengers were labourers. They were en route to Khulna to search for work, police said.  In Bhola, a head-on collision between a trolley and an auto-rickshaw claimed lives of two persons in Char Fasson upazila of the district. The deceased were identified as Sayem, 12, from Aligaon village, and Monsur, 45, from Aslampur area. Two auto-rickshaw passengers died instantly in Helipad area in the morning, said Anamul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Char Fasson Police Station. In the capital, a young man was killed as a pick-up ploughed into him while he was crossing a road in Rayerbagh area.  The deceased was identified as Manik, 22, son of Abbas Ali in Kodomtoli area. Manik worked as a bus helper, Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdul Qadir said. In Khagrachhari, a motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries at Khagrachhari hospital after being hit by a microbus at Lemuchhari of Mahalchhari Upazila. He was identified as Sugoto Chakma, 42, of Maicchasora area of Panchhari Upazila. He was an employee of BRAC, Md Hossain, Sub Inspector of Mahalchhari Police Station said.
