Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) was an internationally-acclaimed musician, composer, artist, author and poet whose haunting melodies captivated audiences worldwide.

Hailed by Nelson Mandela as “a voice of reason that we all must heed,” Sri Chinmoy was an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, artiste, author and poet. Chinmoy’s heart-warming, soul-stirring music has been acclaimed and celebrated by musical giants including Ravi Shankar, Leonard Bernstein and Quincy Jones. Though internationally acclaimed, Sri Chinmoy and his songs were not as well known as of Tagore in Bangladesh.

On 10 and 11 February, the music lovers in Dhaka were introduced to the songs and compositions of Sri Chinmoy through performances by Gandharva Loka Orchestra, a 127-member international orchestra, featuring star musicians and singers from over 15 countries at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre and at Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi.

The occasions were celebrating BRAC’s 40th founding anniversary on 10 February and Bangladesh-er Hridoy Hote, a programme jointly organised by Channel i and a national Bangla daily on 11 February.

The programme also featured performance by Tagore singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya and her school Surer Dhara.

Gandharva Loka Orchestra was formed in 2007 and is led by Panchajanya Burri, a classically trained guitarist, whose symphonic arrangements bring a vastness and celestial expression to the purity and simplicity of Sri Chinmoy’s compositions.

During his lifetime, Sri Chinmoy offered almost 800 concerts around the world, all of them free of charge, in the belief that the inner peace and happiness he sought to convey through his music was everyone’s birthright.
