President for exploring areas of cooperation in shipping with Panama
Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday underscored taking steps to explore areas of cooperation in the field of shipping with Panama as the Latin American country is one of the largest providers of international shipping services.
The President’s exhortation came when newly appointed Ambassador of Panama to Bangladesh Aram B Cisneros Naylor presented his credentials to him at Bangabhaban.
Welcoming the new Ambassador, the President said Bangladesh deeply values the bonds of friendship and cordial relations between Bangladesh and Panama.
“Despite the physical distance, the two countries share common values and aspirations that have been nurtured both in bilateral and multilateral fields,” he said.
Abdul Hamid said Bangladesh is gradually reaching out to its friends in Latin America to enhance its close ties with the South and Central American region.
Bangladesh and Panama may undertake steps for enhancing bilateral trade and commerce through exchange of high-level visits, he observed.
Ambassador Cisneros Naylor said Panama is a strong country in maritime sector and keen to provide cooperation to Bangladesh in the development of its shipping sector.
He said there are 9,000 Panama flag carrier oceangoing ships those are owned by foreign companies, mostly from Japan and South Korea.
The ambassador informed the President that a delegation of Bangladesh commerce ministry visited Panama in 2011 for exploring new avenues of trade and commerce between the two countries.
On his arrival at the Bangabhaban premises, President Guard Regiment gave a guard of honour to the new ambassador of Panama.
Secretaries concerned of the President’s Office and foreign secretary were present.
