Muhith stresses cheaper internet→ Staff Correspondent Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith addresses the inaugural function of BASIS SOFTEXPO-2012 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city on Wednesday. Finance Minister was addressing the inaugural function of a five-day BASIS SOFTEXPO 2012 at Banghabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city on Wednesday. Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) organised the fair, the biggest of its kind in the country, with the theme of 'Empowering Next Generation'. Carel Richter, Charge d’Affaires of Netherlands in Dhaka, was present as special guest. Md Rafiqul Islam, Secretary to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) ministry and M Nazrul Islam Khan, Project Director to Access to Internet (A2I) programme, also spoke at the function with BASIS President Mahboob Zaman in the chair. AMA Muhith said the communication technology service providers have played a big role to achieve impressive achievement in the ICT sector. “You (service providers) now should go to ensure larger internet access by lowering service prices,” he added. Minister said the government would soon connect the country with second submarine cable to help providers ensure faster but cheaper internet. He said the Janata Tower at Karwan Bazar in the city would be available to the software industries within three months while the Hi-tech Park in Kaliakoir of Gazipur district would be opened within a year. Finance Minister said around 4,000 IT engineers and scientists are being produced every year in the country. “But the working staffs are not fully trained as there is no policy of standardisation.” Carel Richter said Bangladesh has potential to become a big outsourcing destination to earn annually US$ 1 billion from Dutch software market. He said Bangladeshi talented and energetic youths are 40 percent more competitive than the neighbouring India in developing software. BASIS president emphasised the need to create 10,000 IT professionals under a crash programme undertaken through Public Private Partnership (PPP). “It is necessary to produce larger number of IT professionals to meet ever growing demand,” he said, adding that IT will become a lifeline for the country’s economy. A2I project director M Nazrul Islam Khan informed that around 16,000 offices in the district and upazila levels would be brought under e-services by December this year. Some 150 participants are displaying their products in the fair. Among the participants, there are 30 IT companies from Netherlands, Denmark and United Kingdom. Over one hundred new IT inventions will be displayed in the fair. Code Warriors' Challenge, IT Innovation Search Programme, BASIS Freelancer of the year award and the gala award night will be the special attractions of the SoftExpo this year. BASIS has decided to award best freelancer of the year. The exposition will remain open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm every day for the visitors paying an entry fee of Tk 50.
