Hearing on writ against SEC rule adjournedInvestors stage protest against lawyers→ Staff Correspondent
A group of agitated investors staged angry demonstration in the High Court area on Wednesday protesting the adjournment of the hearing on the writ petitions against the securities regulator’s directive regarding minimum shareholding by the directors of a listed company.

A Division Bench adjourned the proceeding until 11:00am today after a hearing on the petitions filed by directors of some listed companies challenging the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) directive that a director must have a minimum of two percent of shares in their companies.

The Division Bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif heard the petitions at around 2:30pm on Wednesday.

Under the banner of Bangladesh Capital Market Investor Unity Council, aggrieved retail investors gathered in front of the main gate of the High Court at around 4:00pm and staged angry protests when they came to known that the court has postponed the hearing.

They also hurled abuse at noted lawyers Barrister Rafique-Ul Haq and Dr M Zahir who stood for the petitioners.

Later, police dispersed the investors to bring the situation under control.

Commenting on such incident in the court area, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said that hurling invective at lawyers is unprecedented in the country and that such behaviour was not expected.
