Govt mulls new traffic law with provision of death penalty→ Staff Correspondent

SYLHET: The government is going to enact a new traffic law with a provision of the death penalty for killing people by reckless driving.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Wednesday said that the proposed law would be placed soon before parliament for approval.

After the passage of the law, the rate of road accidents will come down, he said while addressing a condolence meeting at Sylhet Registry Maidan.

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) organised the meeting in memory of Sylhet district unit Awami League vice-president freedom fighter Iftekhar Hussain Shamim who was killed in a road accident recently.

AL joint secretary general Mahbubul Alam Hanif asked the opposition to shun its destructive agendas and come forward to strengthen democracy.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, and former railways minister Suranjit Sen Gupta also addressed the programme, with SCC Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran in the chair.
