NEWS OF THE DAYAustrian energy group OMV's CEO Gerhard Roiss gestures during a news conference in Vienna yesterday. An offshore Black Sea Well jointly owned by ExxonMobil and OMV's Petrom unit has discovered what could be the biggest gas find in OMV's history, Roiss said on Wednesday.
Gas shortage halves power generationElectricity cut in homes, boro farming feared→ Shamim Jahangir
Electricity generation from nine gas-based power plants has dropped by around 50 percent due to gas shortage causing load shedding across the country including the capital city, BPDB officials said.

The power plants are getting 736 mmcfd ((million cubic feet gas per day) of gas supply against their requirements of over 1116 mmcfd.

The nine plants having capacity to generate 2,323MW of electricity are now producing only 1,204MW, half of their capacity, they said.

“We could not generate 1,119MW of electricity due to gas shortage,” they added.

Bangladesh Power Develop-ment Board (BPDB) has expressed its concern over shortage of gas supply to the power plants.

In a letter to Petrobangla Chairman Prof Hossain Monsur, BPDB Chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir last Thursday said the BPDB couldn’t run its gas-based power plants fully due to shortage of gas supply.

The demand of electricity in the country has increased as summer has neared and boro irrigation has started, he said.

“It’s really impossible to enhance power generation through liquid oil fired plants for excessive production cost. The load shedding would intensify public sufferings and also hamper boro irrigation,” BPDB Chairman feared.

He called upon the Petrobangla to supply 25-30mmcfd gas to Chittagong power plant by diverting it from now closed Karnafuli Urea Fertiliser Company. All gas based power plants in Chittagong are now closed due to gas crisis, according to BPDB official.

Residents in Dhaka have been experiencing two to three hours load shedding now while it was three to four hours in villages, officials said.

They feared that it would intensify day-by-day due to higher demand.

ASM Alamgir Kabir told daily sun that people have to exercise restraints on power uses this year too as the country would face power cut in the dry season as the BPDB has to divert electricity for boro irrigation to ensure food security.

"You (people) must show patience as you would face load shedding during boro irrigation period," he said.

The Petrobangla should supply 800mmcfd for smooth power generation during irrigation period starts this month, he said.

During last irrigation season, lawmakers from different constituencies had expressed their worries about the short supply of electricity during boro irrigation.
