An oil tanker, carrying 30,000 tonnes of refined fuel,
reached the Chattogram port on Thursday, marking the ninth such shipment this
month aimed at alleviating fuel shortage concerns.
China’s state-owned energy trading company Unipec exported
the oil and the Hong Kong-flagged MT Gran Couva carried it in.
The shipment contains 20,000 tonnes of diesel and 10,000 tonnes of jet fuel, media reports claimed citing sources at the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC). The diesel will be used in transport and industrial sectors, while the jet fuel will be provided to the country’s airports.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) recently
hiked jet fuel prices by 80% as the Middle East conflict chokes fuel supplies
from the energy-rich region.
MT Gran Couva would be the ninth oil tanker to reach the country’s shores this month. Eight more are expected, but among these, the schedule of six remains uncertain.
Recently, rising prices in the international market and delays in supply have put pressure on fuel management. Although a total of 17 fuel-carrying ships were scheduled to arrive this month, only eight had arrived earlier. With this latest addition, the number increases, but the arrival schedule of the remaining six vessels remains uncertain.
BPC Chairman Md Rezanur Rahman said the ship arrived this morning as per schedule, and there is currently no fuel shortage in the country. He added that initiatives are also being taken to procure fuel from alternative sources.
