Bashundhara Shuvosangho has provided a month’s food supplies and medical assistance to an elderly paralysed man and his wife in Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat.
Attab Ali, 85, of
Khatarpara village under Alampur union, is unable to walk due to paralysis
affecting his body from the waist down. His wife, Shefali, supports the
household by working in other people's homes.
Their hardship
worsened after their mud house collapsed due to rainwater. The couple are now
living in a dilapidated room of an abandoned mud house belonging to another
person.
Members of
Bashundhara Shuvosangho's Khetlal upazila unit visited the couple on Thursday
afternoon and handed over food supplies for a month and cash assistance for
Attab Ali's medical treatment.
Attab Ali
previously supported his family through domestic work. However, he became
bedridden after suffering paralysis in old age.
Since then, Shefali
has taken responsibility for caring for her husband and running the household.
Her limited earnings are barely enough to meet their food needs and cover his
medical expenses. At times, they have to depend on food provided by neighbours.
The food supplies
included rice, lentils, flour, edible oil, sugar, spices, puffed rice, biscuits
and nd other essential items.
Expressing their
gratitude, Attab Ali and Shefali said they struggled to make ends meet and had
never been able to buy so many groceries at once.
They thanked
Bashundhara Shuvosangho for the assistance and prayed for the wellbeing of its
members.
M Russell Ahmed,
president of the organisation's Khetlal unit, said helping disadvantaged people
was a social and humanitarian responsibility.
"After
learning about the hardships faced by Attab Ali and his wife, we extended
assistance within our capacity. We hope financially capable members of society
will also come forward to help people in similar circumstances," he said.
Muniruzzaman,
general secretary of Bashundhara Shuvosangho's Bogura Government Azizul Haque
College unit, attended the programme as a guest.
Among others
present were Nazmul Hossain, general secretary of the Khetlal unit, and unit
members Ramjan Pramanik, Yunus Pramanik, Riyad, Siam, Mezba, Sejan, Jihad,
Jobbar, Al-Amin, Sohel, Sumon, Sujon, Raihan, Naim, Rauf and Minhaj.
