Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a cleanliness drive and dengue awareness campaign at Gopalganj University of Science and Technology (GUST) on Thursday to help prevent the spread of dengue during the monsoon season.

The campaign, organised by the university unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, began in front of the Ekushey Library building, with around 50 student volunteers taking part.

Wearing surgical caps, masks and gloves, the volunteers cleaned the library premises, garage area, roadsides and surrounding bushes, removing weeds and destroying potential mosquito breeding sites with the help of university gardeners.

The volunteers also collected discarded plastic bottles, polythene bags and other waste from across the campus and disposed of them at designated waste collection points to prevent stagnant water where Aedes mosquitoes can breed.

Following the cleanup, volunteers conducted an awareness campaign in the university's New Market area, urging shopkeepers, students and local residents to dispose of waste properly, prevent waterlogging, use dustbins and maintain clean surroundings. They also highlighted the importance of individual and community responsibility in preventing dengue.

Bashundhara Shuvosangho university unit President Mujahidul Islam Sabbir said the organisation plans to conduct similar cleanliness drives across the campus at least once a month to promote a cleaner and safer environment.

General Secretary Rezwanul Islam said the organisation had already distributed waste bins to shops near the campus and was monitoring their proper use. He stressed that preventing dengue requires the collective efforts of students, teachers, staff and the wider community.

The programme was attended by executive members and dozens of volunteers from the university unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
