BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has focused on upholding human rights on the occasion of International Day of Democracy 2026, to be observed across the globe on Tuesday.
In a written speech issued on Monday, Rizvi said the
day generates interest among the people about democracy and builds on a strong
foundation regarding rule of law, freedom of speech, citizens’ rights, human
rights and accountable institutions.
Speaking on the occasion, Rizvi paid deep respect to
those who laid down their lives in democratic struggles and congratulated the
democracy-loving people of the world.
Democracy creates such an environment where people’s
basic rights and liberty remain secured. In such a system, elected public
representatives actively provide services and reach proper decisions, Rizvi
added.
Rizvi further said that if the practice of democracy
continues, no autocrat can raise his head and treat people like his servants.
Focusing on Bangladesh, Rizvi said the people
brought down an autocrat through the blood-stained movement in July 2024 after
16 years of misrule. After the 12 February election, a real democratic
government has been constituted.
The democratic system needs to be strengthened now
to make democracy permanent, Rizvi concluded.
