A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered that folk singer, composer and music director Mujib Pardeshi be shown arrested in a cheque dishonour case.

Judge Md Sadik Ahmed of Dhaka Fifth Joint Metropolitan Sessions Court passed the order, said Shah Alam Mia, bench assistant of the court concerned.

According to the case statement, Mujib took Tk4.40 lakh from the plaintiff in 2003, promising to take the plaintiff’s younger brother, Md Solaiman Sardar, to England.

They paid Tk2.20 lakh through a bank and the remaining Tk2.20 lakh in cash.

Later, when Mujib failed to take Solaiman to England, the plaintiff demanded the money back. Mujib then issued two cheques for Tk2.20 lakh each, which were dishonoured when presented to the bank due to insufficient funds.

The plaintiff subsequently sent legal notices demanding payment, but Mujib allegedly did not repay the money, according to the case statement. A case was filed over the matter under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Earlier, on 4 August this year, Mujib Pardeshi was sent to jail in another cheque dishonour case involving Tk10 lakh, filed by one Idris Ali Biswas in a Magura court in 2022.

The court later sentenced Mujib to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk10 lakh, equivalent to the amount of the dishonoured cheque.

Notably, Mujib Pardeshi’s real name is Mujibur Rahman Molla. He gained immense popularity across the country in the 1980s through Bengali folk songs, singing, composing and directing songs, including ‘Ami Bondi Karagare’.
