A convoy carrying National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders came under attack with bricks and stones in Sylhet's Golapganj upazila on Thursday, damaging at least two vehicles, though no one was injured.
The
convoy, including NCP Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam, was in Golapganj to
meet the families of seven people killed during the July Uprising. Security was
deployed at Golapganj Chowmuhani and other key points from around 11am ahead of
the visit.
The
convoy reached Golapganj Municipality Hall around 1pm and came under attack
while leaving the venue between 2:30pm and 2:45pm. A group chanting "bhua,
bhua" rushed towards the vehicles and hurled bricks and stones, damaging a
windshield and a window. Police dispersed the crowd, allowing the leaders to
leave safely.
The
convoy later faced another obstruction and attempted attack at Panchmile Bazar
before proceeding to Kanaighat under police escort.
Golapganj
Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Shah Alam confirmed that a vehicle
was damaged, saying security arrangements had been in place.
Sarjis
Alam alleged in Facebook posts that BNP activists were behind the attacks. BNP
Sylhet district President Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury rejected the allegation, saying
no BNP leader or activist was involved and that the party maintained a
"zero-tolerance" policy against obstructing NCP programmes.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun said adequate police and BGB personnel had been deployed and the programmes concluded peacefully.
