Bangladesh Police has urged the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters who use the names, photographs and identities of police and other government officials on social media to solicit money and seek influence.
The
warning was issued in a statement released by Police Headquarters on Tuesday.
According
to the statement, a fraud ring has recently been sending messages through
social media using the names, photographs and identities of senior and
responsible officials from the police and other government agencies to demand
money and make various requests for influence.
Police
said such scams are causing financial losses to members of the public while
also tarnishing the reputation of government institutions and senior officials.
Police
Headquarters noted that the use of a government official's photograph or identity
on a social media account does not necessarily mean the account or mobile
number belongs to that official.
The
public has therefore been advised not to respond to such messages or requests
under any circumstances.
Anyone
receiving such fraudulent messages has been asked to contact the National
Emergency Service at 999, the Cyber Police Centre of the Criminal Investigation
Department (CID), or the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police
(DMP).
Bangladesh
Police said law enforcement agencies remain on high alert against such fraud
rings and that those involved will be identified and brought to justice.
