A former Swecchasebak Dal leader was stabbed to death during an arbitration meeting in the capital’s Mouchak area on Monday night, police said.
The victim, identified as Billal Hossain Talukder,
57, was identified as a former convener of the Ramna thana unit of Swecchasebak
Dal, the volunteer wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to police, he was attacked around 8:00pm
in front of Anarkali Market in the area. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College
Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead around 9:15pm.
Police said the incident occurred during a local
arbitration (shalish) meeting held to resolve a prior altercation. Witnesses
reported that an argument escalated during the meeting, leading to a stabbing
attack in which Billal was struck in the chest.
Meanwhile, the victim’s nephew, who was present at
the scene, alleged that the attack was carried out following a heated dispute
involving local political activists.
He claimed that the confrontation began earlier in
the evening and later escalated into violence during the arbitration session.
Police confirmed that the attackers fled the scene
immediately after the incident, and operations are underway to arrest them.
An officer from the Ramna division of the Dhaka
Metropolitan Police (DMP) said initial findings suggest that the stabbing
occurred during a dispute at the arbitration meeting, but investigations are
ongoing to determine the exact motive and identify those involved.
Doctors at DMCH confirmed that the victim had
visible stab wounds to the chest. An autopsy has been undergoing, and the body
has been sent to the hospital morgue for examination.
The murder took place at a time when Home Minister
Salahuddin Ahmed lauded Bangladesh Police for low crime rate nationwide.
At a press conference held at the Secretariat on
Monday, the minister said, “According to the data I have received, there has
been a significant improvement in the crime situation compared to 2025. Crimes
have decreased in almost every category.”
