An Indian national has been detained in Jashore with gold worth nearly Tk1.93 crore and assorted foreign currencies during a drive conducted by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) early Wednesday.
The detainee, identified as Ali Amin Ahmed, was apprehended by members of the Jashore-49 BGB Battalion, said its commanding officer, Lt Col Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan.
Acting on a tip-off, a BGB team intercepted him on a bus travelling along the Jashore–Narail highway in the Taraganj area of Sadar upazila in the early hours. During a search, officials recovered 900 grams of gold in paste form from his possession.
Various foreign currencies, including UAE dirhams and Indian rupees, were also seized.
Subsequent testing by the Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) confirmed the substance to be pure gold.
According to BGB officials, the total value of the recovered gold paste and foreign currencies is estimated at Tk1,93,42,011.
Passport records indicate that the detainee had travelled multiple times between India, the Middle East, Egypt and Bangladesh since 2024.
During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly said he had travelled from Mumbai to Dubai on 20 April and later entered Bangladesh via Dhaka, with plans to return to India through the Benapole land port via Satkhira.
The seized gold paste and foreign currencies have been deposited with the Jashore treasury, while the detainee has been handed over to Jashore Kotwali Police Station after a case was filed against him.
Lt Col Saiful Alam Khan said BGB maintains a zero-tolerance stance on the smuggling of gold, drugs and other contraband items along the border, adding that the drive was part of its ongoing efforts to curb such activities.
