A Dhaka court on Monday placed former director general (DG) of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (Retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, on a fresh three-day remand in a case filed over the murder of Delwar Hossain in the capital’s Mirpur area during the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad passed
the order after police produced Khaled before the court following the end of his
six-day remand in the case and pleaded for another four-day remand.
Earlier on 26 March, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate
Siddique Azad had placed Sheikh Mamun Khaled on a five-day remand after a team
from the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained
him from his Mirpur DOHS residence on the night of 25 March.
After completion of the five-day remand, the court
granted another six-day remand for him in the case.
During the hearing, State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha
Sumon argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyer Morshed Hossain
Shahin appeared for Sheikh Mamun Khaled.
According to the case documents, on 19 July 2024 at
around 3:30pm, 500–700 activists of the Awami League allegedly attacked a
peaceful protest of students and citizens in the Mirpur-10 Falpatti area with
locally made weapons.
It is further alleged that indiscriminate firing was
carried out on the protesters on the instructions of Sheikh Mamun Khaled.
Delwar Hossain was critically injured by gunshots during the incident and later
died on 21 July while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Shyamoli.
A case was filed with Mirpur Police Station in July
2025 in connection with the incident.
