Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested 12 suspected smugglers with 6,000 litres of diesel while attempting to smuggle it to Myanmar from the city’s Patenga area early Saturday.
The detainees included eight Rohingya
individuals, said Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam
Sujan.
According to him, a search operation was
carried out at the outer anchorage of the Bay of Bengal in Patenga at dawn,
during which a motorised boat was intercepted.
The Coast Guard recovered around 6,000 litres of diesel
worth about Tk624,000, six gas-filled cylinders and Tk15,896 in cash from the
boat, he said.
Legal action against the arrestees and the seized items is
under process, he added.
