At least four people were killed in four separate road
crashes within about 24 hours in different parts of the Dhaka South areas.
The deadly crashes took place in Badda, Demra, Shyampur and
Jatrabari roughly between Sunday noon and Monday noon, said Police Inspector Md
Faruk, in-charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Around 2:30pm on Monday, a CNG-run auto rickshaw hit a
motorbike on the Maddha Badda U-loop, leaving its teenage driver critically
injured and ultimately dead. The back-driver was also injured in the crash,
before the three-wheeler sped past the site.
The deceased was Fahim, 17, a tenth-grader at the local
Siraj Mia Memorial School and College. He lived with his family at the
Baganbari area of Uttar Badda.
An hour after the crash, he was pronounced dead by the
doctors at DMCH.
Md Halim, the teenager’s father, told reporters that he had
bought a motorbike for Fahim a month ago, ignoring his own warnings of a
potential road crash, to satisfy his child. Md Halim’s fears concerning the
motorbike, a highly accident-prone vehicle in Bangladesh, unfortunately materialised
on Monday.
Earlier, around 1:30pm on Sunday, Sheikh Farid, 52, was
killed when riding a CNG-run auto rickshaw near the Shyampur Buriganga Eco-Park.
Two others, including the driver of the three-wheeler, was injured when a truck
hit the vehicle.
Around 5pm on Sunday, DMCH doctors pronounced Sheikh Farid dead.
Sheikh Farid sold clothes on a roadside van and lived in
Kadamtoli area of the capital, his maternal uncle Soaib Morshed later told
reporters.
Around 6pm on the same day, one Suruj Ali, 65, was critically
injured when his battery-run rickshaw overturned at Konapara area of Demra in the
capital. At 8pm, doctors declared him dead. There was no passenger on the
three-wheeler when the accident took place.
Separately, pedestrian Taslima Akter, 34, was seriously injured
when a bus hit her at the Sayedabad area. Locals rushed her to DMCH, where the doctors
pronounced her dead around 7pm on Sunday.
