Police have sought a seven-day remand for dismissed Lt Col Md Afzal Naser, who was arrested in connection with the murder of a man named Delwar Hossain during the July uprising in the capital’s Mirpur.
He has been shown arrested as a suspect in the case.
On Monday, the Investigation Officer of the case and
Detective Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin submitted the remand
application. A hearing on the remand petition is scheduled to be held shortly
at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasib Ullah Piyas, Public Prosecutor
Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.
According to the remand application, on 19 July
2024, victim Delwar Hossain, 40, was present in Falpatti area in Mirpur-10
around 3:20pm in support of the student movement during the July protests.
At that time, 500 to 700 activists allegedly
affiliated with organisations of the Awami League, along with named and unnamed
accused, reportedly opened indiscriminate fire under the direction of Afzal
Naser.
Delwar was shot during the incident and collapsed at
the scene. He was later taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular
Diseases in critical condition. As his condition deteriorated, he was
transferred the following day, 20 July, to City Care General Hospital in
Shyamoli for better treatment, where he died on 21 July while undergoing
treatment. Following the incident, the victim’s family filed the case.
The remand petition also stated that the preliminary
investigation found sufficient evidence of the suspect’s involvement in the
incident. Police said a seven-day remand is necessary to interrogate Afzal
Naser thoroughly to uncover the main mystery of the case and ensure a proper
investigation.
Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka
Metropolitan Police arrested Afzal Naser early Monday from a house at Road
No-12, House No-864, in Mirpur DOHS.
