Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated with great joy in a “fascism-free environment”.
“This Eid, celebrated in a fascism-free atmosphere, is truly joyful. Through this celebration, we have formally exchanged greetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. We will continue on the path towards building a democratic Bangladesh,” he told journalists after Eid prayers on Saturday (21 March) at the National Eidgah ground.
However, Fakhrul described the occasion as somewhat sombre in the absence of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The main congregation of Eid-ul-Fitr was held at the National Eidgah ground adjacent to the High Court at 8:30am. Around 35,000 devotees offered prayers at the main pandal, while the total number of attendees, including surrounding streets, reached around 100,000.
