Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has said that the interim government began rebuilding the country from minus following the fall of the previous regime through the July mass uprising in 2024.

“We did not start from zero—we started from minus. Clearing the rubble, we rebuilt institutions and then set the course for reform,” he said while addressing the nation on Monday night.

In his 16-minute farewell address, the chief adviser said, “Today, the interim government is taking its leave. But the momentum of democracy, accountability, freedom of speech, and rights that has begun—may it never stop.”

He said, “Even though we have relinquished state responsibilities, the overall responsibility of building a new Bangladesh lies with me, with you, with all of us. It is the duty of each of us to realise the country as a true democracy.”

Yunus said the interim government has been able to firmly restore three fundamental pillars of the country’s foreign policy – sovereignty, national interests, and dignity.

“Bangladesh is no longer a country with a submissive foreign policy or dependent on the instructions and advice of other countries; today's Bangladesh is confident, active and responsible in protecting its independent interests.”

The chief adviser said they are committed to building relations with all countries of the world based on mutual respect and interests.

At the same time, he said, Bangladesh has established itself today as a state capable of taking necessary strategic decisions for the future while maintaining balance.
