The government is pursuing necessary diplomatic and legal initiatives to bring ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to the country.
The information was revealed at the second meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Foreign Ministry at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday, with committee chairman Johorat Adib Chowdhury in the chair.
The government earlier wrote to India seeking the extradition of Hasina, who is facing a death sentence in Bangladesh for crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 mass uprising.
The committee further discussed foreign policy, stressing the need to maintain a balance while giving priority to national interests.
A report on preventing illegal migration and human trafficking was also discussed at the meeting, with past systemic weaknesses in the process of sending workers abroad being highlighted.
The meeting stressed the need to ensure proper authentication of documents and information relating to migrant workers.
It also recommended establishing a transparent and effective mechanism, in coordination with the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and the Ministry of Labour and Employment, to send workers abroad through suitable and properly verified recruiting agencies.
The committee was also informed that, for the first time, a Migration Wing had been established at the Foreign Ministry.
The committee also reviewed developments in resolving the Rohingya crisis and expressed hope of visiting Rohingya camps in October.
Committee members and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, Md Amanullah Aman, SK Azizul Bari, ABM Mosharraf Hossain and Sanzida Islam attended the meeting. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir also attended as a special invitee.
