The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an inquiry against former interim government adviser and National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, along with three officials of the youth and sports ministry, over alleged irregularities in recruitment, transfers, postings, tenders and procurement.
ACC Deputy Director (Public Relations) Akhtarul Islam confirmed the inquiry to journalists on Wednesday. The three other officials named are former secretary Md Mahbub-Ul-Alam, Joint Secretary (Youth Wing) Dr Shaikh Mohammad Jobayed Hossain, and Deputy Secretary (Youth-1 Section) Md Masum Ahmed.
The commission has formed a four-member special team led by Deputy Director Md Zahid Kalam, with Assistant Director Md Nasrullah Hossain and Deputy Assistant Directors Imran Akon and Roman Uddin as members.
According to ACC sources, the inquiry followed a complaint against Asif Mahmud and preliminary evidence of wrongdoing, including allegations of a tender and procurement syndicate, bribery to facilitate illegal activities, money laundering and illicit financial transactions.
Further complaints allege overseas money laundering, illegal Bitcoin transactions, extortion, nepotism and the use of regional influence.
The complaint also alleges that Asif Mahmud interfered directly in the formation of the Bangladesh Cricket Board while serving as youth and sports adviser, and that he received illegal benefits through his former assistant private secretary Moazzem Hossain.
Asif Mahmud was appointed to the interim government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus, sworn in on 8 August 2024 following the fall of the fascist Awami League government. As a representative of the July uprising, he initially held the labour and youth and sports portfolios, later adding local government in November 2024. He resigned in December 2025 and subsequently joined the NCP as its spokesperson.
The ACC inquiry will examine the allegations, the roles of the four individuals, and whether government funds were misused, Akhtarul Islam said.
