Police must live up to public expectations: Salahuddin

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has directed law enforcement agencies to meet public expectations by restoring confidence and strengthening democratic accountability.

He made the remarks during a meeting with chiefs of various departments and agencies under the home ministry at the Secretariat in the capital on Thursday.

“A political government has been formed through a fair election after one and a half decades. The public now has high expectations of us. We want to implement our election manifesto and fulfil those expectations,” he said.

The minister stressed the need to set clear priorities for the democratic reform of the police and other law enforcement agencies.

He said the government aims to rebuild public trust through institutional reform and the moral and professional development of personnel serving under the ministry.

“We will have to recruit the necessary manpower. Budgetary allocations from the finance ministry will also be required. We intend to appoint new personnel and ensure co-ordinated efforts,” he added.

Salahuddin emphasised that a comprehensive and well-structured plan is essential for modernising the sector. He instructed heads of various departments and organisations to submit proposals and recommendations for the formulation and implementation of reform plans.
