Happy birthday, Shahabuddin Ahmed

Today is the 69th birth anniversary of internationally-acclaimed Bangladeshi artist and freedom fighter Shahabuddin Ahmed.

Different organisations have arranged various programme to mark the day.

The main birthday anniversary programme will be held at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy today at 05:00pm.

Presided over by National Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman, Jatiya Sangsad’s Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will attend the occasion as chief guest.

A cultural programme will also be held.

This was disclosed at a press conference held at the seminar room of BSA at 12:30pm on Monday. Professor Abdul Mannan, Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts’s dean Nisar Hossain, Artist Moniruzzaman, Onno Prokash’s publisher Mazharul Islam, BSA Directors Sohrab Hossain, Showkat Faruk, Asharaful Alam Paplu, Kazi Asaduzzaman, Jahism Uddin among others were present on the occasion.

An artist camp and children’s drawing competition also held on Saturday marking the 69th birth anniversary Shahabuddin Ahmed.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) and National Committee to Observe 69th Birthday Anniversary of artist Shahabuddin jointly observed the programmes at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University.

Prominent artists of the country participated in the camp. Many students of various   educational institutions of the capital participated in the drawing competition. 

The topic of the competition was “Our Liberation War” and “Our Liberation War and Shahabuddin Ahmed”.

Born on September 11 in 1950, Shahabuddin Ahmed is a Bangladeshi painter. He was awarded the Chevalier De L’ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres (Knight in the Order of Fine Arts and Humanities) by the Ministry of Cultural Affair and Communication of France in 2014. He was the recipient of Independence Day Award by the Government of Bangladesh in 2000. 

His paintings are displayed in galleries like Olympic Museum, Laussane, Switzerland, Municipal Museum of Bourg-en-Bresse, France, Seoul Olympic Museum, South Korea, the National Taiwan Museum and Bangladesh National Museum.

Ahmed studied at Dhaka Art College (now Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka) before obtaining a scholarship to study at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris during 1974–1981.

Ahmed served as a platoon commander for the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, before studying art, and his experiences in the war are clearly reflected in his artwork. He has painted numerous scenes from the war (e.g. the Killing of the Intellectuals) as well as portraits of key figures such as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Ahmed’s paintings are permanently displayed in Galerie Daniel Besseiche, Galerie Samagra, Galerie du Fleuve in Paris 6ème (rue Jacob, rue de Seine, sur Guénégaud) Galerie Jas de la Rimade in south of France (Carcès near to Aix-en-Provence) Galerie Daniel Besseiche in Courchevel, Deauville and Saint-Tropez. His paintings are often sold by auction in Drouot, Artcurial, Christie’s, and Versailles Enchères.

Ahmed currently lives in Paris.
