Mashrafe key to Asia Cup success: Walsh

Bangladesh National Cricket Team pace bowling coach Courtney Walsh has hailed the role of Tigers’ ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza as a power house of motivation as the team prepared to fly off to United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the upcoming Asia Cup 2018 in Dubai which is scheduled to start from September 15.

As Dubai will host Asia Cup this year, all eyes will be on batsmen and spinners. Even Tigers’ pace bowling coach Courtney Walsh believes Dubai pitches will favour the batsmen but he also hopes Mashrafe will play a vital role with both the ball and his innate quality to motivate players. Walsh also kept his faith in Mustafizur Rahman and Rubel Hossain ahead of Tigers’ Asia Cup mission.

“I am very confident about Mashrafe. He is the key for Asia Cup success. He will lead Bangladesh attack from the front. He is one of the most experienced players in the team. They rest will follow him. Apart from him, Mustafizur and Rubel are also looking very confident. I am also feeling confident because they are confident. They did fine job in West Indies. I am proud of their ODI performance,” Walsh told reporters on Saturday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

“Dubai’s wickets are not favourable for the pacers. Both Dubai and Sharjah is good for batsmen. The spectators will expect big score in such prestigious tournament. So I think it will be a challenging task for the bowlers,” Walsh added.

Over the years, Mashrafe proved that he is true icon and leader for Bangladesh. Recently under Mashrafe’s supervision and motivation Bangladesh restored some pride during their West Indies tour by clinching ODI series.

After two weeks of preparation, Bangladesh National Cricket Team are all set to leave for UAE today to take part in six-nation Asia Cup 2018. Bangladesh team including Mominul Haque will depart from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:00pm.

Shakib who is currently in United States of America to accompany his family, will join Tigers’ Dubai camp while Mahmudullah who returned home after playing PSL, will depart with Bangladesh team.

Earlier, BCB announced a 15-man squad for Asia Cup and added Mominul Hoque after Tamim Iqbal and Nazmul Hossain Shanto got injured during practice session.

Bangladesh will start their Asia Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 15 while they will take on Afghanistan on September 20 in their last group stage match.
