BSTI seals off two jar water cos

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) in a drive on Tuesday sealed off two jar-water companies and fined two other companies for preserving and marketing untreated and unsafe drinking water in plastic jars.

A mobile court, led by BSTI Executive Magistrate Sarowar Alam of RAB headquarter conducted the drive in association with BSTI at Mirpur area in the capital.

The court found four companies involved in the illegal business of selling untreated water in the name of safe drinking water without BSTI license. Two companies were fined to the amount of Tk 3 lakh in total while two others sealed off.

During the drive, BSTI has destroyed around 1,000 water jars for containing untreated water directly taken from WASA supply line.

BSTI Director General Sardar Abul Kalam was present during the drive. He told journalists BSTI has continued the highest effort to reach adulteration free food at consumer level. BSTI’s responsibility for test, certify and monitor 194 mandatory products set by the government. Among these, drinking water is important one.
