Celebrated actor, elocutionist and cultural personality Syed Hasan Imam and prominent stage and screen actress Ferdousi Majumder have received with this year’s ‘Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak 2018’ for their contribution to their respective fields.
The award was introduced in memory of martyred musician, cultural activist and freedom fighter Altaf Mahmud who was abducted by the Pakistan army on March 30, 1971. The foundation has been giving the award every year since 2005 to mark the death anniversary of late musician and martyred freedom fighter Altaf Mahmud on August 30.Renowned media personality Aly Zaker handed over the awards to the recipients at a ceremony held at the National Music and Dance Centre auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital on Thursday. Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Foundation organised the function.
The award includes a crest, a sash and honorarium of Tk 10,000, to Aly Zaker as the chief guest of the programme, which was also attended by daughter of Altaf Mahmud and member secretary of Altaf Mahmud Foundation Shawon Mahmud.
Hasan Imam said, this award was one of the biggest achievements in my life. Altaf Mahmud was older than me; he was also like a friend. He met him for the last time in 1971. Altaf Mahmud played a key role in the liberation of our nation, he said.
Hasan Imam said, later generations should be educated about the sacrifices he made for our nation and the difficulties he went through. He was a great human being.
Altaf Mahmud was a martyred freedom fighter and none of us can forget what he did for our nation, says Ferdousi Majumder.

Those who received Altaf Mahmud have been: painter Baby Islam (2005), cultural personality Enamul Haque (2006), singer Sabina Yasmin (2007), musician Ajit Roy and music director Khondakar Nurul Alam (2008), singer Sudhin Da (2009), Independent Bangla Betar Kendra Sanghnik Bhatta Bhattacharya (2010), music director Alam Khan (2011) Professor Rafiqul Islam and Nayakraj Razzak (2012), painter Mustafa Monowar and music director Md Shahnewaz (2013), artist Kaiyum Chowdhury and music director Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul (2014), music director Alauddin Ali and comedy Hasan Azizul Haque (2015), Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury (2016), dramatist Ali Zaker and industrial critic Mofidul Haque (2017).
Altaf Mahmud was a musician, cultural activist and martyred freedom fighter of the Liberation War of 1971.
Altaf Mahmud was active in the country's major political struggles including the language movement and Liberation War. He composed the music for the iconic language movement song "Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February". He was a member of Dhaka Crack Platoon and worked as a producer at the Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Liberation War.
