A court in Lalmonirhat has issued a warrant for arrest of Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Naem Nizam and publisher Maynal Hossain Chowdhury in a defamation case.

Judge Md Afaz Uddin of Lalmonirhat Cognizance Court-4 issued the warrant on January 2.

The order came though the plaintiff was absent from hearings for seven consecutive dates.

Lalmonirhat District Awami League president and former State Minister Motahar Hossain filed the defamation suit against the editor and the publisher of the Bangladesh Pratidin and its Lalmonirhat correspondent Rezaul Karim Manik in 2014.

Regarding issuance of arrest warrant even after non-appearance of the plaintiff in court, noted lawyer and Awami League law affairs secretary SM Rezaul Karim said that if the plaintiff remains absent on more than one date without taking any legal action in any case filed directly with the court, the case will be dismissed.

The lawyer also said that if the proceedings of such case continue then it is a violation of law.

On April 9, 2014, former state minister Motahar Hossain filed the case for publishing a report centering him on the first page of the Bangladesh Pratidin.
