Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday said the government will not approve any budget that would cause sufferings to the people.
"People of all strata of the society will be happy after passage of the budget," he said at a post-budget seminar organised by Bangladesh Agriculture Economists' Association (BAEA) at Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh, reports BSS.
Mentioning that the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for the welfare of the people, Tofail said: "The government will do everything for the wellbeing of people."
Referring to the talks on VAT and tax in and outside of the Jatiya Sangshad, he said there will no talk after the budget is passed. "All the issues will be cleared through the speech of the Prime Minister in the budget discussion in the Sangshad."
Referring to the rice price, the commerce minister said there is no shortage of rice in the market and "we have also sufficient rice in stock."
Citing the government's decision of importing 2.5 lakh metric tons of rice, Tofail said: "Tender for importing another 6 lakh metric tons of rice is being floated."
Prof Mohammad Mijanur Rahman Kajol made a keynote presentation while BAEA President and Planning Commission Member Dr Shamsul Alam chaired the seminar.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance Ministry Dr Abdur Razzaque, member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Agriculture Agriculturist Abdul Mannan, Barrister Jahangir, Dr Mihir Kumar Roy and Dr Muhammad Kamruzzaman also spoke.
