Family connections weigh heavily

Nepotism has reportedly been maintained instead of practising democracy in forming the new BNP central committee, as family members and relatives of some leaders have got many posts, depriving many seasoned politicians.
Sources said BNP leaders and activists across the country are unhappy with the new committee as democracy has not been practised properly in forming it. Many dedicated and active leaders have not been included in the committee.
After over four months of its national council, the beleaguered party announced a 502-member central executive committee, a 19-member standing committee and a 73-member advisory council on August 6.
Some controversial leaders and sons of two war criminals have been included in the committee while the family members of some senior BNP leaders have been given posts in the committees. The decision has made many leaders and activists upset.
In the council session, Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman have been reelected uncontested as the chairperson and senior vice-chairman respectively.
According to party insiders, the two vacant posts of BNP standing committee might go to Khaleda’s daughters-in-law — Zobaida Rahman, wife of Tarique Rahman, and Sharmila Rahman, wife of late Arafat Rahman.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been made secretary general, his younger brother Mirza Faisal Amin an executive member of the new committee and his brother-in-law Mahbubur Rahman a member of the BNP standing committee.BNP central leader Salahuddin Ahmed’s wife Hasina Ahmed has been made a member of the central executive committee. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain’s son Maruf Hossain has been made an executive member and Aninda Islam Amit, son of Tariqul Islam, an assistant organising secretary,
Naoshad Jamir, son of Jamiruddin Sircar, has been made affairs secretary. Naoshad is also working as a legal counsel for Tarique Rahman. BNP central leader Mirza Abbas’ wife Afroza Abbas has been made assistant women affairs secretary while his brother Mirza Khokon has been a member of the executive committee.
Goyeshwar Chandra Roy’s daughter Aparna Roy has been given the post of assistant secretary for marginal and manpower development affairs. The daughter-in-law of Goyeshwar and daughter of BNP vice-chairman Nitai Roy Chowdhury, has been made a member of the executive committee.
BNP vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo’s son Tabith Awal has also been made an executive member. BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Miah’s wife Shahida Rafique was made an adviser to the BNP chairperson. Besides, Harunur Rashid Khan Monno and his daughter Afroza Khan Rita have been made advisers to the BNP chairperson.
Hummam Quader Chowdhury, son of executed war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, and Foysal Alim, son of convicted war criminal late Abdul Alim, have been made executive members. Salauddin Quader’s brother Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury has been made vice-chairman of the committee.
Nasima Akhter Kalpana, widow of BNP leader Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintoo, has been made an executive member. Controversial BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu’s brother Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has also got a post.
BNP vice-chairman Nasir’s son Mir Helal has been made a member of the executive committee. BNP joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon’s wife Shirin Sultana has been given the post of self-dependence affairs secretary.
Sahrin Islam Tuhin, son of Khaleda’s sister Selima Islam, and vice-chairman Abdul Mannan’s son-in-law Nasiruddin Asim have also got posts in the new committee.
M Shamsul Islam, who was a member of immediate-past standing committee, has not been included in the new committee. His son Moyeenul Islam Shanto, however, has been made an adviser to the BNP chairperson.
Tahsina Rushdi Luna, wife of missing BNP leader M Ilias Ali, has become a member of the BNP advisory council.
Former BNP secretary general late KM Obaidur Rahman’s daughter Shama Obaid has been made an organising secretary of the party.  Late whip Jahed Ali Chowdhury’s son Fahim Chowdhury and late secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain’s son Abdul Hamid Dablu are members of the new committee.
Former Environment Minister Shajahan Siraj’s wife Rabeya Siraj has been given the post of assistant weaver affairs secretary.
Former State Minister Alamgir Kabir’s brother Anwar Hossain Bulu and former Finance Minister Saifur Rahman’s son Naser Rahman have been made members of the executive committee.
Sources said the party leaders and activists across the country are unhappy with the BNP high command for inclusion of family members and relatives in the central executive body by depriving many ‘dedicated and active leaders’.
While asked about the committee, BNP standing committee members refused to make any comment. BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah said his son worked hard for the party, but didn’t get any post in the new committee.
Talking to daily sun, a number of leaders said democracy practice has been less important while nepotism has highly been prominent in forming the new committee.
