Anyone who is reading Surah Yousuf attentively, a particular line would attract his or her attention significantly.

(Remember) when Yusuf (Joseph) said to his father: "O my father! Verily, I saw (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating themselves to me. [Surah Yousuf: 4]

As a child, I asked my father to explain what this lines means. My question was clear; I asked him how a planet, a star or a moon can prostrate itself before Hazrat Yousuf. These celestial bodies do not have arms or limbs and the word sujood (sejda or sajda) evidently means prostration. In answer, my father said prostration simply means to show respect. The answer primarily satisfied me. However, on pondering further, I realized, Yousuf must have seen the planets, the sun and the moon practically doing something which he thought was a way of showing respect to him. What were these constituents of the universe doing which Yousuf thought was a way of showing respect?

Human beings have been ignorant of the planetary motions for most of their history. It was only a few decades ago that the astronomers and scientists came to the conclusion that every object in the universe was moving. In the case of a planet, it orbits a star; in our case it is the sun which is being orbited by several planets. The moon, a satellite orbits our planet Earth. The sun itself is orbiting the galactic center of the galaxy the Milky Way. If the galaxies orbit anything is not known to the human beings yet.

When one tries to observe the planetary motions and ponders about Yusuf’s dream, it is possible for him to realize that Yusuf might have seen the eleven distant stars, the sun and the moon orbiting. This hypothesis will essentially mean that the prostration or sujood of a planet for a superior celestial body (in this case, a star [the sun]) is the orbiting action.

There are several instances in the Qur’an where a concept has been stated saying everything was prostrating before Allah. Here is one example:

Whatever beings there are in the heavens and the earth do prostrate themselves to Allah willingly or in spite of themselves: so do their shadows in the morning and evenings. [Surah Ra’d: 4]

As everything in the universe seems to have an orbiting motion, a conclusion that we can reach is everything is orbiting Allah, who happens to be in the center of the universe.

Now we can shift our focus to the orbiting action of the Muslims of the Kaaba. The action of tawaf is considered to be the best form of worship by hadith. As everything in the universe orbits centering one Allah, Ibrahim emulates and acknowledges the fact by orbiting the Kaaba which is a symbol of the House of Allah. Only Allah knows what the real House of Allah (Bait-Allah) looks like which must be there somewhere in the universe.

This discussion tells us about how every single form of worship in Islam has a significance and astonishing meaningfulness.
